NEAR GOLD HILL, Ore. — For the rest of the day, drivers along I-5 southbound near Gold Hill will be moving through just a single lane.

A truck carrying 50,000 glass bottles crashed just after 4 a.m. Friday morning near exit 45. The truck crash initially took up both lanes of traffic. ODOT officials say they arrived on scene at about 6 a.m. when morning commuters were starting to move into the detour.

“We were out here with traffic control and people were able to get around moving real slow on the dirt shoulder, and in order to do the cleanup we had to make the decision to actually do a detour put a detour in place so that’s for the recovery of the vehicle,” explained ODOT Asst. Dist. Manager Jeremiah Griffin.

ODOT representatives say all of the glass bottles have to be removed from the trailer before moving it from the side of the roadway.

Officials at the crash say the truck driver was the only person involved. There is no word yet on the driver’s condition.

Drivers should expect delays and congestion through the crash site. Photos are courtesy of ODOT.
